Industry Updates
Congrats Diamond
Hoof Care on 30 Years!
Herman Barkema
Awarded Down Under!
With humble origins as a hoof-trimming
business in 1994, Diamond Hoof Care
has steadily expanded and evolved its
business to offer innovative hoof-care
products and other solutions for herds
across Canada and the US.
Joining forces with Intracare BV in 2006,
it positioned them with new methods
for lameness control – especially Digital
Dermatitis and hoof-trimming techniques
with a specific focus on sustainable
practices without antibiotics.
Highlights in recent years include being
recognized at Tulare’s World Ag Expo
for their Intra Bath product in 2011 and
obtaining Canada’s first non-antibiotic
DIN for treating Digital Dermatitis (Intra
Hoof-fit Gel) in 2015.
Diamond Hoof Care’s commitment to
high standards is evidenced by their
health regulations compliance, receiving
Drug Identification Number (DIN) and
Veterinary Health Products (VHP)
registrations.
“As much as we are excited about our
first 30 years, we remain committed
to continued innovation, driving
success for our valued clients with
honest relationships while protecting
human health when using our hoof care
products,” summarizes founder Koos Vis.
Congratulations to University of Calgary
professor/researcher/leader, Dr. Herman
Barkema on being awarded the Roger Morris
ISVEE Award for Outstanding Contribution
to Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics.
The 17th International Symposium on
Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics
took place in Sydney, Australia in November.
This prestigious award ‘recognizes the
impact and significance of lifetime
contributions to the field of veterinary
epidemiology.’
Barkema’s colleague, Diego Nobrega,
received the Wayne Martin ISVEE Emerging
Scientist Award at the same conference.
Barkema’s work with the One Health
movement is heavily focused on the
judicious management of anti-microbials
to ensure human health can be protected
by avoiding antimicrobial resistance.
Barkema graciously recognized the
involvement of many others, “All my research
is done in close collaboration with my
graduate students and postdocs, and
colleagues all over the world. So, all of
you whom I had the pleasure to work with,
please see this award as one that is given
to you as well!”
Silver Award Winner!
Congrats to freelance ag journalist Kate Ayers for her Silver
award at Canadian Farm Writers Federation’s ‘Awards for
Excellence in Agricultural Communications’ event in Halifax on
October 5. Kate’s winning article came in the Communication
Short category for her farm safety piece, “Rate of Child On-Farm
Injuries Unchanged for Decades,” in the Spring 2023 issue of
Western Canadian Dairy News.
Kate took home Gold in the Business/Economic Reporting
category (Farm Co-Operatives Aim to do Business Right) in
2023 and Technical Feature category (Helping Cattle Keep
Their Cool in the Heat) in 2022.
An Ontario farm girl and University of Guelph Animal Sciences
grad, Kate relocated to Vancouver Island several years ago to
train with Canada’s national runners in the 5,000m and 10,000m
categories. She has represented Canada on the world stage
four times so far, with sights set on running longer distances
on the roads and trails.
Kate and her husband hope to one day start up a small-scale
mixed farm.
