Hugh Smythe
July 16, 1961 – October 10, 2024
Hugh Smythe, a hoof trimmer of 34 years
and resident of Parksville, BC, passed
unexpectedly on October 10, 2024, at the
age of 63.
Hugh is survived by his wife of 34 years,
Shawna; his mother-in-law Judy; his children
Austin James (Nickole), Colter Anthony
Houston (Natasha), Dakota Jackson (Ava),
Melanie Marion; his grandkids Lincoln Wayne,
Grayson William, and Donovan Chad; his siblings Larry, Alan (Susan), Wendy
(Bruce), Sherry (Richard), and Jan (Dan). He is predeceased by parents
Wentworth and Mabel, and his sister Carol.
Born in Salmon Arm on July 16, 1961, to Wentworth and Mabel Smythe, Hugh
took an early lead on independence, moving to Merritt at 16. Hugh started a
13-year career as a bull rider by attending Johnsen’s Bull Riding School at 13
years of age. This sparked a lifelong love for cattle that led him to become
a Cow Calf Admin, graduating from Olds School of Agriculture in 1979, and
working with ranches across BC. On Father’s Day, 1990, his fate was changed
forever as he was introduced to the world of hoof trimming at a carwash
in Courtenay, something he would champion over the next 34 years. Three
short months later, Hugh married his soulmate, Shawna. Together, across two
moves and eight years, what started as a young couple and a new company
grew into a young family, welcoming three sons: Austin, Colter, and Dakota.
After 10 years of living by the motto “mud is thicker than blood,” the Smythe
clan gained a sister, Melanie, during Hugh’s time training her dog. Melanie
would continue on to make Hugh a Papa, having three boys: Lincoln, Grayson,
and Donovan. Not only did Hugh cherish his own children but welcomed
their life partners as integral parts of his heart, welcoming Nickole, Natasha
and Ava as his own blood.
Hugh wore a lot of hats during his time with us. A bull rider, rancher, cow
calf admin, commercial diver, commercial fisherman, head planer, mechanic
and hoof trimmer, to name a few. But the hats he was proudest to wear were
husband, father, and papa.
Congratulations to Kurtis Severinski
and Genevieve Houweling, who
were married on September 14th,
in Falkland, BC. The happy couple
was surrounded by family and
friends on a beautiful Okanagan
fall day. Sharing in their joy were
excited kids Timber and Brynlee De
Ruiter and Kallen Severinski, and
proud parents Leroy and Darlene
Severinski (Maple Ridge, BC) and
Alison Houweling (Mabel Lake, BC).
Following the wedding, the couple
spent a week honeymooning on
Vancouver Island. Kurtis and Gen
will continue to reside in Mara, BC,
where Kurtis works as a herdsman
for Serene Lea Farms.
John Kennedy McFaul
November 7, 1937 - July 12, 2024
It is with great sadness that we announce John
passed away at the age of 86 with family by his
side at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital.
John was born in Chilliwack, BC where he grew
up playing soccer and working on the family
farm. His love of agriculture flourished as a
member of the 4-H Club, and he worked his way
up to President of the Canadian 4-H Council and
Livestock Barn Superintendent at the PNE. On May 26,1961, John married
his high school sweetheart, Evelyn Fraser, right after her graduation from
nursing school.
In 1964, John graduated with a Degree in Agrology from the University of
British Columbia. He began working for the Farm Credit Corporation in Fort
St John where his children Patti (1964) and Doug (1965) were born. The job
transferred him to Duncan (1967) and then Abbotsford (1970). John began
his own agricultural consulting firm in the early 1970s and was involved in
several small business ventures until 2016 when he retired.
John valued family and was very involved in his children’s lives, always
willing to be a coach, manager, or to fill whatever role was needed. His
passion for sports lives on with his grandchildren, and you could always
spot him in the stands or on the sidelines.
Community minded, John worked with the Rotary club for most of his
adult life, supporting community service in Canada and traveling to the
Philippines twice as part of the SMILE program. From the time he was 18
years old, John was a Freemason and became a member of the Abbotsford
Masonic Lodge. John was also a board member of the Abbotsford Centre
for Epilepsy for several years.
John was pre-deceased by his parents, Dorothy (1995) and William (Bill)
(2003) McFaul, and by his beloved Evelyn (2013). He is survived by his
children, Patti (Rob) and Doug (Diane), brother David (Joanne) and cherished
grandchildren, Sydney, Tori, Sean, and Ryan.
