Linda Barkman
May 9, 1945 – October 5, 2024
Linda Barkman (nee Friesen) aged
79 of Blumenort , MB, passed away
peacefully on Saturday, October 5th
at Bethesda Regional Health Centre in
S teinbach, MB, af ter a ver y short
battle with cancer. She is survived
by her beloved husband, Menno Barkman,
their four children and their families:
Darrel (Chantal), children Cameron and
Jazmyne; Darcia Hiebert, children Bryson,
Tristan, Traxton, and Drayton; Tanya (Matt
P l e t t ) , c h i l d re n Ka t a r i n a , C l i n t o n ,
and Emma; D ave (D ebbi), children
Abigail and Logan. She will also be
lovingly remembered by her brother Paul (Margaret) and in-laws, Elmer (Doris),
Betty Barkman, Betty (Ben Thiessen), Wilma (Carl Doerksen) and Amanda. She
was predeceased by her parents Martin and Anna Friesen, and her brothers
Peter, Menno and Ernie.
Linda was born on May 9, 1945 (even though her birth certificate says May 10)
in Steinbach, MB. Growing up on the family farm in Blumenhof, she was the
only daughter in a family of boys. She never enjoyed school or did particularly
well, which led to her dropping out in grade 8. After this she spent time hoeing
beets, working at Granny’s, and in the kitchen at the Municipal Hospitals in
Winnipeg. Linda professed her faith in her late teens, a faith that grew deeper
and stronger in her final weeks.
Menno and Linda were married on April 10, 1971, and moved to Menno’s family
farm in Blumenort where they lived until her passing. In those years, Linda
encouraged Menno to keep milking cows even in the seasons where he wasn’t
convinced that he wanted to keep going. During this time, they welcomed four
children, Darrel (1972), Darcia (1974), Tanya (1978), and David (1980).
Linda was a servant at heart, preferring quiet acts of service to being in the
spotlight. She was a loyal wife, a dedicated mother, a faithful daughter, sister,
and aunt, but the role that brought her the greatest joy was her role as nana.
She had a way of making each grandchild feel like they were extra special. She
was a second mother to many that needed it, and a good friend to many more.
She spent many years welcoming people into her home. She enjoyed gardening,
tending to her flowers, and serving her family and church in many ways.

Lawrence Henderson
April 1, 1930 – July 3, 2024
Lawrence Henderson, Lacombe, AB, passed away
July 3, 2024, at the age of 94 years.
Lawrence was born on April 1, 1930, in Lacombe,
AB. He was a beloved husband to Shirley, who
passed away in 2015, and will be greatly missed
by his two sons and daughter, as well as his seven
grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Lawrence grew up on the Henderson dairy farm
in Lacombe. As a schoolboy Lawrence and his
brother used a horse-drawn wagon and their
bicycles to deliver their bottled milk door-to-door in Lacombe. Lawrence
was married to Shirley in 1951, and the couple began to develop a purebred
Holstein herd under the ‘Laclea’ prefix. This prompted Lawrence to become
involved in the Lacombe Artificial Breeders Association where he was
president from 1955-1962.
Lawrence was a devoted and passionate volunteer in many organizations
throughout his life. He was a Director and Past President of the Alberta Holstein
Association, member of the Alberta Dairy Control Board, and Director and
Executive member of the Central Alberta Dairy Pool.
Lawrence spent fifteen years as a Director with the Holstein Association of
Canada serving as President from 1987-1988. He was a Director with Dairy
Farmers of Canada from 1988-1992. He also served as a Member of the Advisory
Committee to the Canadian Health of Animals Branch for the Eradication of
Brucellosis.
From 1974 to 1988, Lawrence participated in Trade Missions to Mexico, USA,
England, Scotland, China, Africa, Australia, Holland, and Germany. Lawrence
continued to volunteer until he was 87 years old.
To recognize his accomplishments and significant contributions to the
community over the years, Lawrence received the 2010 Lifetime Achievement
Award presented by the Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce. In 2015
the Henderson family celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Henderson
Farm Family.
Lawrence Henderson will be most remembered for his gift of leadership,
dedication to agriculture, his passion for volunteering, his love for life, sense
of humour, and his love for his family. He touched many lives and will be
deeply missed by all who knew him.
