This year’s Canadian Young Speakers
for Agriculture (CYSA) competition had
11 senior speakers, two of which were
representing Scotland! Two common
themes for speeches were food security,
and the importance of making sure those
who didn’t come from farms still understood
where their food comes from. BC’s Ashlee
McAvoy, a member of the Milky Way Dairy
club in the Okanagan who is currently
studying at the University of Toronto,
delivered her speech called, “What’s the
Better Teacher?” In it she debated whether
it was school or agriculture, including 4-H,
that better prepared her for life.
Ashlee says, “What stood out most was
that all speakers had varying degrees of
experience with agriculture, and some of
the most impactful speeches were those
from competitors who hadn’t grown up
around agriculture at all. It was truly an
amazing example to hear perspectives on
agriculture through so many different views,
and to see how many youths across Canada
and Scotland firmly believe that agriculture
has a key part in their future.”
The CYSA competition has been held
annually at the Royal Winter Fair since 1985
and allows 4-H-aged youth the opportunity
to speak about agriculture, while developing
their public speaking skills and confidence.
