Royal calved for the first time in January
2024, and both Ian and Nicole were
excited about her potential. She was
immediately added to their show
cow program and made her debut
in April at the Western Dairy Expo in
Saskatoon. Placing second in the Fall 2
Year Old class, to the eventual Reserve
Intermediate Champion, Royal turned a
lot of heads that day and the Crosbies
saw the benefit of consigning her to
their summer sale.
With a vested interest in Royal’s success
are her breeders at Martiann Holsteins
(Delta, BC). Angela Hamming says, “We
give all the credit to Ian and Nicole for
finding Royal and getting her consigned
to the Convention sale. It’s been exciting
to watch her develop!” Despite her
‘Martiann’ prefix, the Hamming’s haven’t
been developing this bloodline for
endless generations. “We bought her
granddam at the Okanagan Holstein
Club sale as a 9-month-old calf,” says
Angela. ROMYNS DEMPSEY ROYAL VG-
87, backed by an EX-91 3E 3* BOLTON,
produced a SIDEKICK heifer calf on her
third lactation. “We have been genomic
testing all our animals since 2017,” says
Angela. “We knew that Dempsey Royal
had pretty good numbers herself and we
really liked the Sidekick mating on her.”
MARTIANN SIDEKICK ROYALTY 782 VG-
86 (Royal’s dam) was a favourite in the
Hamming herd, but unfortunately was
lost as a 3-year old, due to illness. Her
second daughter, MARTIANN MERCY
ROYALTY 1120 (S: Novum MERCY), is
recently fresh with her own heifer calf
and looks very promising.
Currently, Royal is approaching the end
of her lactation and is due next spring
to FRAHOLME BIG AL-P (Alligator x
Bighit). She has produced embryos
by STANTONS OVERHAUL-P and
STANTONS REMOVER-PP, that have
either been implanted at Benbie or
sold for export. Royal sold for $30,000
in the Benbie summer sale and is
now owned in partnership with Dave
Eastman (Vector Genetics). “She’s a
very intriguing cow,” says Dave, “With
show type and great numbers, she’s got
everything you want.”
Looking ahead, Ian says, “Our goal is
to get Royal out to the fall shows next
year and continue pushing the polled
conformation gene forward with her
offspring.” A polled, VG-88 2 year old,
who is +17 Conformation and +3564
GLPI, making 5.3% Fat – this young cow
has an exciting future!

Right Stuff’s dam lactation value is extreme – $17,532
making her the 2nd highest cow in the large herd and
she does it living and competing with them daily!
Congratulations to his breeders Stanton’s for their
foresight to develop a bull so easy to use that has
all the “RIGHT STUFF”.
