20 WC DAIRY NEWS  CHRISTMAS 2024

Exhibitors from Saskatchewan, British
Columbia and Alberta definitely made
their presence felt at the exciting National
Holstein and Red & White Shows at the
Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto,
ON, with many top awards captured by
Western Canada breeders. While Canada’s
added Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza
health requirements kept a few American
exhibitors away this year, those that did
come were welcomed by enthusiastic
Canadians eager to compete at the 102nd
Royal before large onsite and online
crowds from around the world.
The National Holstein Show on November
7 and 8 drew 406 exceptional entries for
the appraisal of Judge Blair Weeks of
Weeksdale Holsteins, Pleasant Valley,
PE, who said, “They don’t have to be the
biggest, but they have to be the best.”
Getting his stamp of approval for Grand
Champion was JEFFREY-WAY HARD ROCK
TWIGS, the 4-Year-Old “who comes at
you like a freight train” with her strength,
mass, dairy quality, amazing mammary
system and openness of rib. Sharing in
the thrill of her victory were her owners
Kevin Doeberiener & Lindsay Bowen (OH)
and Pat Conroy (IN) and their new partners,
R&F Livestock Inc. (SK) and Walker Dairy
Inc. (ON) who had just acquired an interest
in this silky black Hardrock daughter the
night before the show. Twigs, who was
also Grand Champion at World Dairy Expo,
would go on to be selected the Quality
Seeds Supreme Dairy Champion of the
Royal the following day.
Taking Reserve Grand Champion was
the speckled, high style 5-Year-Old by
Crush, LO-PINE-VA LADY CRUSH, from
Butlerview Farm (IL). She used her length,
width and bloom of rear udder to place
ahead of last year’s Grand Champion,
ERBACRES SNAPPLE SHAKIRA-ET, the
winning Longtime Production cow and
Honourable Mention Grand Champion
by O Kaliber. Owned by Ferme Jacobs,
Ty-D Holsteins, Kilian Theraulaz, Ferme
Antelimarck and Attaboy Holstein (QC),
Shakira was also the show’s Production
Award winner.
R&F Livestock and Walker Dairy took
home the Intermediate Champion prize on
OLORTINE AVENGER DESIGN, the popular
Avenger daughter who won the Winter
2-Year-Olds and had recently been Grand
Champion at Westerner Dairy Showcase.
Her length, volume of mammary, handling
of legs, and fact she had had two calves,
took her over the first Spring 2-Year-Old
and Reserve Intermediate Champion,
GARAY LAMBDA CELINA, from Butlerview,
who was sired by the show’s Premier Sire,
FARNEAR DELTA-LAMBDA-ET.
Banners and Special Recognitions
Butlerview won the Premier Exhibitor
banner. R&F Livestock and Walker Dairy,
who had ten animals finish in the top ten,
including three first prize animals (and
Grand and Intermediate Champions), were
runner-up for Exhibitor. Rounding out their
list of class winners was JENDRO DELTA
LAMBDA SANDY in the Senior 3-Year-
Olds. Kingsway Farms (ON) claimed both
the Overall and Junior Premier Breeder
banners, while Velthuis Farms (ON) was
Junior Premier Exhibitor. Golden-Oaks
Master was Junior Premier Sire.
Several special awards were presented
during the Holstein Show. Kenton
Lindenbach of Robella Holsteins (SK)
Intermediate Champion – OLORTINE
AVENGER DESIGN, Dave Dyment on
the halter.
Royal Agricultural Winter Fair
Twigs Takes It!
won the Andrea Crowe Achievement
Award, while Joel Phoenix (ON) received
the Curtis Clark Achievement Award
and Peter Leach (ON) earned the Donald
Dubois Showmanship Award.
The Red and Whites
Markus Hehli of Mosnang Holsteins,
Rimbey, AB, had the honour of judging
the Royal’s National Red & White Show
on November 7th. He assessed 132 head,
the second largest number of entries
ever in this event. Grand Champion for
the second straight year was PREMIUM
APPLE CRISP LILLY, the Apple-Crisp
daughter from Butlerview who had headed
the 5-Year-Olds. Grand Champion at World
Dairy Expo the month before as well, Lilly
used her dairyness, openness of rib and
desirable feet and legs to beat the first
Mature Cow and Reserve Grand Champion,
HURCROFT AWE LILLYANN-RED, the
Awesome daughter from Oakfield Corners
(NY) who was admired for her capacity and
beautiful mammary system. The Overall
Premier Breeder and Exhibitor banners
went to Ferme Rolandale (QC) with their
Jolibois prefixed entries. MR BLONDIN
WARRIOR-RED-ET was Premier Sire of
the R&W Show.
Westcoast Holsteins (BC) captured
Reserve Intermediate Champion R&W on
their well-balanced, structurally correct
Spring 2-Year-Old winner, INTENSE
DEVOUR GINGER. Westcoast finished
third in the Overall R&W Premier Breeder
race and bred two class winners. Their
homebred entry, WESTCOAST SWINGMAN
MAZE, whose sire and dam both carry the
Westcoast prefix, was first 4-Year-Old and
Champion Bred & Owned of the show with
her exceptional mammary system. They
also bred the first Winter Yearling in Milk,
