14 WC DAIRY NEWS  CHRISTMAS 2024
BC Branch News
PRESIDENT’S REPORT
It’s hard to believe that we are almost at the
end of 2024! This is a good time of year to
reflect on the year that was and look ahead in
anticipation of things to come. The BC Branch
was involved in a wide variety of events this
year. From supporting shows in the Okanagan
and Vancouver Island, hosting the Western
Canadian Classic and the Branch Picnic, and
three exciting Breeders Cups – there has been
lots of opportunities for BC breeders to gather
together.
The province was well represented at the
Westerner Dairy Showcase in Red Deer, AB,
which is now a National Show. Congrats to all the
exhibitors, including Westcoast Holsteins who
had Grand Champion R&W with WESTCOAST
SWINGMAN MAZE, who went on to be named
Champion Bred & Owned at the Royal a couple
weeks ago.
BC will host the National Holstein Convention,
April 14th-16th, 2026, with the show taking
place April 17th. The Branch looks forward
to assembling a capable and enthusiastic
committee – you’ll be hearing from us soon!
I would like to thank all the directors for their
hard work throughout the year, and their
dedication to making all of our events possible.
Wishing all of you a Merry Christmas – we’ll
see you in 2025!
NATIONAL DIRECTOR’S REPORT
Thomas Cuthbert
President
In November, Holstein Canada and Lactanet
teamed up to put on the second edition of
Dairy Dynamics, in Chilliwack, BC. There was
lots of information given about new apps and
tools available to producers, including Holstein
Canada’s ConneXXion app, which continues to
gain popularity, as it has quickly become the
easiest way to do on-farm genomic testing. Dr.
Gordon Atkins gave an excellent presentation
on genetics, which generated some great
discussion, and a lot of young producers were
in attendance, which was great to see.
Next year, Holstein Canada will celebrate 100
years of its Classification system. To promote
this, Holstein Canada will be recognizing all
breeders who have achieved 100+ Excellent
cows. Congratulations to the five recipients in
BC: WILLSWIKK (206), BENCO (188), WEDGWOOD
(185), HAMMING (172) and WESTCOAST (157). The
regionalization of the Classification system will
also begin in March 2025.
The Board has been working diligently on
strategic issues, which include the hiring of
Paul Larmer as Advisor to the Board. We also
continue to work closely with head office staff
to ensure the continuation of Holstein Canada’s
priorities.
I want to wish all our dairy families a restful
Christmas season. I’m looking forward to
kicking off 2025 with the Master Breeder
reveal on January 17th!
